Ikebana has a long history in Japan. It is a traditional culture loved by many people and affecting Japanese culture. In these days, more than 300 schools in Japan. A school is a group based on some believes or manners. Each school has each thought and method of ikebana.

The fisrt and biggest ikebana school ~Ikenobou~

Ikenobou is the earliest ikebana school. The scale is the largest in the world. The number of the students is the most. And everyone who learned ikebana knows the name. Ikenobou was named after the progenitor of ikebana. His name is 池坊專応-ikenou senou-. He was a Buddhist priest in Muromachi period in1500s. He wrote the first book about the method and technique of ikebana. Therefore, it is said that he established the base of ikebana.
Ikenobou mind regards the beautiful nature as irreplaceable things. Japan has four seasons. Spring, summer, fall, winter, each season has each beauty. One season going, the flowers and leaves are changing. In Ikenobou school, they find the beauty of the plants in not only cherry blossoms and autumnal tints but also fresh verdure, falling leaves and the branch without leaves.

3 styles as the period

Ikenobou school has 3 styles. The oldest style is 立花-Rikka-. Rikka was established in Muromachi period. It is expressed as nature with vegetation. The second is 立花正風体-Rikka-shofutai-. Rikka-shofutai was estabilished an increased and complicated Rikka style. The other style is 立花新風体-Rikka-simputai-. Rikka-simputai is a new Rikka style established in 1999. The style harmonizes with a modern life style, not a traditional one.
Each style makes different works. Watching different style work, you could understand the history a little.
