What is “ikebana”? What is the wonderful point?
Ikebana is one of the traditional Japanese art. It is also called “Kado”. “Ka (華)” means flowers. “Do(道)” means art, road and way.
The origin was in Buddhism. In Japan, we have placed flowers in front of Butsudan (Buddhist altar). Later, the flowers were placed in the tokonoma (Japanese traditional display or shelves to
show pictures or flowers) of a home. In the 16th century, the method of flower arranging in the tokonoma was established by Buddhist monks Ikenobo, because they offered flowers before the tablet of the deceased.
They showed the way of flower arranging to aristocracy.
They established not only the method of flower arranging but also the philosophy of Japanese life.
The Expansion of Ikebana into the Citizen
In the edo era, the culture of citizen reached its peak. Especially, the latter term of the edo era, the peaceful times, some merchants had strong interactions to the citizen culture.
The culture in Bunka and Bunsei period, called Kasei culture, established the nowadays traditional Japanese culture. In those 30 years, kabuki, sensyu and ikebana were created, which fascinate the people all over the world.
